Last week we were given a brief by Eat Big Fish to create a series of animations with a typographical theme to show their appreciation for a lady called Teresa. They sent us some statements about Teresa written by other people from the company, which a group of 10(ish) of us divided between us and animated. The links between the animations were the typographical theme, the cream and black colour pallet and a brief summary of Teresa’s characteristics (sophisticated, elegant, likes black cats and shopping in heels, owns a black mercedes and is small.) The biggest challenge is that we only had 5 days to create these animations, which included the weekend so no filming could be done then. The plan was to receive the text on Wednesday, discuss our ideas on Thursday, develop ideas and make sets over the weekend, film on Monday, edit on Tuesday. It seemed like a really tight schedule, but it worked really well and we all managed to produce an animation on time.
For mine I really wanted to experiment with paper and shadows. I hadn’t actually done a typographical animation before and I thought that the characters would make some really interesting shadows. Unfortunately I could not use the laser cutter as it was all booked up so I had to hand cut all the text. I used stop motion to film both the text and the transitions and only edited it to put the seven clips together. I was a bit concerned that it would be really repetitive as there were seven sentences so I decided to vary how each sentence was revealed. I am happy with the result considering the time frame we were given. If I had more time I would have used the laser cutter to make the text neater.
