I went to visit the Decode: Digital Design Sensations exhibition at the V&A in collaboration with onedotzero. It is a relatively small exhibition in the Porter Gallery, but I really enjoyed it.
It is a an exhibition of digital and interactive installations. In this post I will show my favourite pieces from the exhibition.
This is a video piece by Aaron Koblin called Flight Patterns. It maps the flight paths of aeroplanes across North America over time. The webpage can be found here. I love this piece as it shows existing data in a beautiful form. It is an exact representation of the flight paths, also showing in figures the number of airborne flights and the time. The data is visually represented in order to inform the viewer whilst also creating something aesthetically pleasing and fascinating to watch.
Another installation I really enjoyed was Weave Mirror by Daniel Rozin. It is an interactive piece with a screen of mechanical woven parts which rotate to show different colours. These parts rotate to show information gathered by a camera to reveal the image of the person standing infront of the screen. This is the image shown when I stood in front of the screen.
This video demonstrates the installation.
The reason I like this piece is similar to the reason why I like Aaron Koblin’s Flight Patterns. The installation shows a method of interpreting real data, and this one is in real time. The viewer can watch as each mechanical weave rotates to show its individual colour, which contributes to the image as a whole.
